Rwanda
& the Gorillas

Trek through misty Virunga forests to encounter mountain gorillas face-to-face — one of the most profound experiences on Earth.

A Face-to-Face Encounter with Mountain Gorillas

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is home to nearly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas — and a gorilla trek here is widely considered one of travel's most extraordinary experiences.

The trek begins in the bamboo forests at the base of the Virunga volcanoes, winding upward through cloud forest and nettles until your guide quietly signals to stop. And there they are — a gorilla family, completely wild, going about their morning. Silverbacks, mothers with infants, juveniles playing. You share 98.3% of their DNA, and in that moment, you feel every percent of it.

Beyond gorillas, Rwanda is extraordinary. Nyungwe Forest harbours a remarkable 13 primate species including chimpanzees and L'Hoest's monkeys. Akagera National Park on the eastern border has been rewilded with lions and rhinos. And Kigali, Rwanda's immaculate capital, offers excellent cuisine, cultural depth, and inspiring stories of resilience.
